Biography

Brian Smith is president of Bon Secours Mercy Health’s core operating entity (its hospitals and clinical services division). The core consists of 48 hospitals and more than 1,200 sites of care in communities across seven states in the U.S. and in the Republic of Ireland. In his role as president, Smith provides strategic leadership and management of operations for all aspects of clinical care delivery, including nursing, pharmacy, lab, quality, clinical effectiveness, post-acute services and all other functions that support the ministry’s core activities.

Smith previously served as chief operating officer for Bon Secours Mercy Health. In a prior role, he was CEO of the ministry’s north division. He also held the position of executive vice president/chief operating officer with St. Rita’s Health Partners in Lima, which included two hospitals, four physician joint ventures and a wholly owned physician enterprise.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Ashland University.

Smith is a member of the Ohio Hospital Association Board of Directors and has been recognized by Modern Healthcare with its “Up and Comers” award and by the Cincinnati Business Courier with its “2017 Chief Operating Officer of the Year” award. He was past chairman of the board of the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce and served on the Ohio Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Summa Health System Board of Directors, the Mercy College of Ohio Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board for the James Dicke College of Business Administration at Ohio Northern University.
