Chief Administrative Officer Joe Gage named board chair of the Catholic Health Association’s Board of Trustees for 2026–2027

Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) Chief Administrative Officer Joe Gage will serve as board chair of the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) from July 1 to June 30, 2027.

CHA is the largest association of Catholic healthcare ministries in the country, representing hundreds of hospitals, long-term care facilities and related organizations that together serve millions of people each year. As board chair, Gage will help guide the association’s strategic priorities, advocacy efforts and mission-focused leadership, working closely with CHA leadership and member organizations to strengthen the collective voice of Catholic healthcare during a time of significant industry transformation, evolving national policy, financial pressures and rapid technological change.

“Catholic healthcare is a precious gift, one that calls us to serve all who come with compassion, dignity and care for the whole person: mind, body and spirit,” said Gage. “At a time when the challenges facing our ministries are larger than any one organization, we are called to come together, to work together, speak with one voice and act in unity so Catholic healthcare can continue to thrive in our communities for generations to come.”

As chief administrative officer of one of the largest health systems in the United States, Gage oversees human resources, information and technology, global services and three academic institutions, supporting nearly 60,000 associates across the ministry. He focuses on strengthening organizational culture, advancing talent development and driving operational excellence.

“Joe has devoted his career to empowering people and organizations to thrive with a focus on delivering exceptional care while compassionately serving and uplifting communities. CHA and our members look forward to working with Joe as we reimagine healthcare to advance the common good and ensure access for all,” said Sr. Mary Haddad, CHA president and CEO.

With more than 30 years of leadership experience across healthcare and other industries, Gage has guided organizations through growth and transformation while maintaining a strong focus on mission and values. His leadership has been deeply shaped by Catholic healthcare formation and mentorship, which continues to inform his approach to building collaborative, mission-driven organizations.

Gage has served on the CHA board since 2022 and has been a leader in Catholic healthcare for years, championing collaboration, innovation and a deep commitment to mission. His appointment reflects BSMH’s ongoing commitment to advancing the mission of extending the compassionate ministry of Jesus and ensuring access to compassionate, high-quality care for all, especially those who are poor and underserved.
