Biography

Dr. Katherine Vestal has been a member of the Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) Board of Directors since its formation in September 2018. Initially serving as vice chair, Dr. Vestal assumed the appointment of chair beginning January 2021 and completed her term as chair in December 2022. Prior to serving on the BSMH Board, Dr. Vestal was chair of the Mercy Health Board of Directors, having served on the Mercy Health Board since 2009. Dr. Vestal retired as president of Work Innovations LLC, and in that role served as business advisor and senior consultant to executives of complex health care provider organizations. 

Previously, she was a partner in Healthcare Consulting Services for Cap Gemini Ernst & Young. Prior to that, she served as vice president and managing director, Healthcare Consulting Services, for Hay Group, Inc. and helped to develop the firm’s national and international health care operations consulting practice. Earlier, she was a partner at Ernst & Young LLP. 

Dr. Vestal also served as a vice president at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill. and as president of Northwestern Memorial Home Health Care, Inc. She began her health care career at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, first serving as director, Hermann Children’s Hospital, and then as associate executive director, Nursing Services; associate executive director, Patient Care Services and executive associate to the chief executive officer. 

She earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Texas Christian University, a Master of Science from Texas Woman’s University and a doctorate from Texas A&M University. Dr. Vestal also pursued postdoctoral studies in economics at the University of Saint Thomas and completed a Johnson & Johnson Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance. She has been a Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award Examiner and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Academy of Nursing.
